Rimonabant is a new multifunctional diet pill that is reported by the Journal of the American Medical Association of helping individuals sustain weight loss, improve high-quality lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol and triglyceride levels, improve blood makers and quit smoking.
Acomplia is also the first in a new class of Cannabinoid-1 Receptor Blockers (CB1). These therapeutic agents are used to treat obesity and related conditions by selectively blocking the CB1 receptions located in the brain and peripheral organs that are vita in the lipid and glucose metabolism including the liver, adipose tissue and the gastrointestinal muscle and tract. Acomplia turns off the same brain circuits that cause hunger in individuals who smoke cannabis.
Acomplia decreases overactivity of the endocannabinoid (EC) system that includes the CB1 receptor and has been determined to control energy balance, regulate body weight and control lipid and glucose metabolism. Acomplia is used in conjunction with diet and exercise to treat overweight or obese individuals who suffer from abnormal fat levels in the blood or type 2 diabetes. The drug may even be able to prevent cardiovascular disease. Men with a waist circumference of at least 102 centimeters and women with at least 88 centimeters will benefit the most from taking the drug.
Acomplia can also help individuals to quit smoking. Sanofi-aventis has studied the drug in one year studies involving more than 6,500 smokers to determine if it motivates people to quit. The FDA issued a non approvable letter for Acomplia as a smoking cessation treatment after Sanofi-aventis submitted their new drug application. However, the FDA did approve Acomplia as a weight management product.
Although Acomplia was approved in June of 2006 in the European Union, it is still awaiting approval in the United States. The American health authorities have requested additional information from Sanofi. The Acomplia clinical trial studies revealed the product to promote sustained weight loss and improve a wide range of cardiometabolic risk factors. Approximately half of the study participants who received 20 mg of Acomplia experienced an improvement in triglycerides, HDL-cholesterol and the blood sugar control indictor, HbA1C beyond that of patients experiencing only weight loss. Possible side effects of Acomplia include nausea and vomiting. What is the shelf life of the pills?
